Euro 2020 - Predictions for Knock Out Stages
« on: June 27, 2021, 12:25:49 PM »
Hi there - the next match in the knockout rounds is Netherlands (F) vs. Czech Republic (U). According the odds listed by Zagata, the Netherlands are heavily favoured to win. In sports astrology, it seems that the underdog has to have many significators in its favour to overturn the favourite. Bookmakers stay in business by predicting winners successfully. The message is that the underdogs need significant astrological support to triumph in contests where the bookmakers have the two teams marked by widely spread odds.

I have attached the chart below. I will be taking a different approach here, using some traditional techniques (or at least inspired by traditional techniques) rather than the methods of Simon Chokoisky.

Observations:

1. The favourite is identified by the ascendant and MC; the underdog by the descendant and IC. The lords of the angles should be primary indicators of the outcome.
2. L1 is Jupiter and L10 is Mercury
3. L7 is Mercury and L4 is Jupiter
4. In this case, the lords are the same, but the roles are reversed. The Netherlands players are represented by Jupiter, the greater benefic, and the Czech's by Mercury. The outcome for the Netherlands is indicated by Mercury; by Jupiter for the Czechs.
5. Jupiter is almuten of the first house. Mercury is almuten of the seventh and the tenth. This suggests that both teams are competitive and are in with a chance.
6. The rulers for each team are dignified being in their own signs, again suggesting a competitive match.
7. Mercury is both lord and almuten of the tenth, the house that indicates the outcome for the favourite. This might suggest that the Czech's are able to triumph over the Netherlands, being both lord and almuten of the outcome from the Netherland's perspective.
8. I am going to suggest that the natural significators of the favourites are Venus and Jupiter, the lesser and greater benefics. If we extend this analogy, the natural significators of the underdog would be Mars and Saturn. To triumph, the underdogs would need a great deal of support from Mars and Saturn, the lesser and greater malefics.
9. The benefics are significant players in this chart. Jupiter is in its own sign in the Egyptian bounds of Venus and in the exaltation of Venus; Venus is in the bounds of Jupiter. These are powerful suggestions that the favourites are well figured. Venus is trine the ascendant.
10. The lord of Fortune is in the sign of the Moon, and in the exaltation of Jupiter. Fortune is in the bounds of Venus.
11. Jupiter is the victor of the chart. Jupiter has a significant number of counts of dignity in the places of the Sun, Moon, Fortune, Ascendant and Pre-natal Lunation.
12. Beneficent Venus is the almuten of the fourth, sixth, eighth (with Moon), and twelfth with Mars. The sixth, eighth and twelfth are difficult houses and the Venus' mastery of these places suggests the momentum is with the favourites.
13. The malefics Mars and Saturn are co-almutens of the second house, another difficult house, but not so challenging as the sixth, eighth and twelfth.
14.  The Moon is moving from conjunct Saturn and opposition Mars, to trine Mercury, the lord of the tenth and the outcome for the Netherlands.
15. The antiscion of Mercury is conjunct Venus blessed Fortune. Again this might suggest cosmic support for the underdogs but for the role played by Venus and Jupiter.
16. Alcyone is on the western horizon at the start of the match, suggesting disappointment for the underdogs.

On balance, I feel the Netherlands will win. If time permits I will add further analysis later.

Note: since the game has started, I will leave this analysis 'as is'.

In game commentary. The Czechs are up 2-0, overturning the favourites. This suggests the key considerations are point 7, 14 and 15. The fixed star Alcyone doesn't seem to have carried disappointment to the 'dog'! In points 12 and 13 I mention the almutens of the 'bad' houses. Saturn and Mars are almutens of the second and Mars and Venus the almutens of the twelfth. The underdog's natural significators here outnumber the favourite's 3-1. Venus is almuten of the sixth and the eighth (with the Moon), but the Moon here seems to be acting for the underdogs.

Result - Bookmakers 1, Astrology 0!

Belgium vs. Portugal

In the odds quoted by Zagata, Belgium here are favourites, although according to the bookmakers this match is more finely balanced than the one earlier in the evening. We might expect a balance of significators for and against the favourite and the underdog, making the outcome of the match uncertain from an astrological point of view.

Applying the same methodology as the first post in this thread:

1. L1 and L10 are the primary houses of the favourite; L7 and L4 are the primary houses of the underdog. L2, L6, L8 and L12 are the rulers of the 'bad houses'.
2. L1 is Jupiter and L10 is Venus. The benefics, perhaps natural significators for the favourite rule the houses of the favourite, suggesting a clear victory. However, Venus and Jupiter together, while indicating the advantages accruing to the favourite, may suggest laziness, complacency and an expectation of winning that comes from over-confidence.
3. L7 is Mercury and L4 is Mars. Mars is a malefic and perhaps a natural significator of the underdog, along with the greater malefic Saturn. Mars and Saturn as natural significators of the underdog, suggest the effort to which the unfavoured side must go to overturn the favourite. Mars and Saturn, as malefics, suggest that any 'dog wishing to win must display a mix of sheer determination, grit, focus and physical strength to beat the natural flair of the favourite.
4. Jupiter is in the Egyptian bounds of Venus at the beginning of Pisces. Venus is in the bounds of Jupiter at the beginning of Leo. Venus is exaltation lord of Pisces. This suggests the strength of the Belgian side. Jupiter is in the second and Venus is on the cusp of the eighth.
5. Mercury is in dignity in Gemini in the sixth house. Mercury is in the bounds of Mars. Mars is in Leo, in the bounds of Venus. Both primary significators for the underdog are in difficult houses - the sixth and the eighth.
6. All primary significators are in difficult houses. This suggests a toughly fought match. The almutens of the difficult houses are: second - Saturn, six - Mercury, eight - Sun, twelve - Jupiter. The second and sixth are for the underdog, the eighth swings towards the underdog as ruler of Leo from the seventh, the twelfth is for the favourite. In the previous match, malefics being almutens of the twelfth and second swung the match to the 'dog. However the symbolism here is less clear. Slightly favouring the underdog Portugal perhaps?
7. The first house cusp is in the bounds of Mars and the tenth house cusp is in the bounds of Jupiter. This suggests that the favourites may ultimately triumph, the tenth house being the outcome for the favourites, but with significant opposition from the underdog.
8. The descendant is in the bounds of Saturn, and the IC is in the bounds of Mercury. The bound lords here support the determination of the Portuguese side, but perhaps do not represent sufficient strength to overcome the favourites in the final analysis.
9. The almuten of the first house is Jupiter; the almuten of the tenth is Saturn. The underdog runs the favourite very close!
10. The almuten of the seventh is Mercury and Saturn, significators of the underdog, giving them fortitude and stamina. The almuten of the fourth is the Sun. The Sun is in the bounds of Mars.
11. The moon, lord of the Sun and ruled by Saturn, moves from the opposition of Mars and Saturn to the trine of Mercury in the sixth. The moon's transit is clearly in favour of the underdog. However, it is important to note that the Moon does not rule any house cusp, nor is it the almuten of a house, suggesting that it is perhaps frustrated in its efforts to support the 'dog. The moon is also very close to trine Mercury, suggesting its influence is fleeting and not sustaining for the duration of the match.
12. The victor of the chart is Saturn, having most counts of dignity in the places of the Sun, Moon, Fortune, Ascendant and PNL. Saturn is closely followed by the Sun in scoring. Both planets are significators for the underdog. The planetary day ruler is Sun; the ruler of the hour is Saturn.
13. Vindemiatrix culminates at the start of the match. In general, this star is given to Saturn and Mercury.
14. Mercury rises with the co-rising degree of Aldebaran, a martial star. Sun rises with the co-rising degree of Bellatrix, a star associated with Mars and Mercury.
15. Mercury sets with the co-setting degree of Betelgeuse, a star of Mars and Mercury.
16. Mars sets with the co-setting degree of the cluster Praesepe, associated with Mars and the Moon.

Summary:

Whilst it may be unwise to bet against the bookmaker's choice, this hard fought match may go to the underdog Portugal. Winning will not be easy, but a good deal of symbolism supports a narrow victory for the Portuguese, perhaps at the close of the match, or in extra time, or in a penalty shoot out. Belgium must not fall back on the natural signification of the benefics as a guarantee of victory, and the underdogs will have to extract every gram of determination from the natural signification of the malefics to triumph.

Pre-match commentary. The learning from Netherlands vs. Czech Republic is that the transit of the Moon may be a key factor here again (point 11).

In game commentary. The Belgians are leading 1-0. I was never much of a betting man. Bookmakers 2 Astrology 0! We'll see.

Post-match commentary. The Belgians, as favourites, won 1-0, despite many chances for the Portuguese team. I will comment in more detail on the outcome and symbolism at a later date, but clearly the relationship between the benefics was critical here.

The fixed stars don't seem to have been particularly relevant, although Vindemiatrix culminating at the beginning of the match may signify victory for the favourite.

Croatia vs. Spain

With the bookmakers in an early lead, let's try again with a slightly altered symbol set.

The bookmakers have Spain as heavy favourites here, so it is unlikely that the underdog will win. However, Croatia are a tough team to beat and can cause upsets.

1. The most relevant factors seem to have been L1 for the favourites, L7 for the underdogs, L10 for the victory, the bounds for the significators. The idea for using the benefics as the natural significators for the favourites and the malefics for the underdog seems to have had some merit. The transit of the moon seems to have some potential too.
2. The fixed stars don't seem to have played a significant role so will be discarded at this point, pending further opportunities for research.
3. L1 is Mars; L7 is Venus. Both are elevated planets, with Mars being the higher in altitude. Both are ruled by the Sun in Cancer in the bounds of Venus.
4. The ascendant is in the bounds of Jupiter; the descendant is in the bounds of Saturn.
4. Mars is in the bounds of Venus, and Venus in the  bounds of Jupiter.
5. L10 is Mercury. The MC is in the bounds of Jupiter. Mercury is Gemini in the 7th, in its own sign and the bounds of Mars.
6. The Moon is in the final degrees of Aquarius and is void of course as it makes no further aspects before leaving the sign. It's first aspect on entering Pisces will be to conjunct dignified Jupiter. It enters Pisces just before 8PM, Danish time, just after the end of the match unless there is extra time, in which case it might come into play, favouring the Spanish.
7. Taking Jupiter as the natural significator of the favourite and Saturn as the natural significator of the underdog (I'm not using Mars and Venus here), the indications seem to favour the Spanish.
8. Both ascendant (the favourite) and the MC (the prize) are in the bounds of Jupiter. Venus, as lord of the seventh is in the bounds of Jupiter too. These symbols favour a Spanish win.
9. Counter-indications are the descendant, the underdog, being in the bounds of Saturn, and Mars, as L1, being in the bounds of Venus (L7).
10. Moon is the bounds of Saturn at the beginning of the game, and then enters the bounds of Venus after the end of the game. If there is extra time, Moon will be in the bounds of Venus (L7) during extra time. However, any efforts of the underdog to win seem spoiled by the Moon approaching Jupiter (signifying the favourite) once it enters Pisces.
11. The almutens of the first, seventh and tenth are Mars, Venus and Mercury.
12. The almutens of the difficult houses are Saturn (2), Venus (6), Moon (eight), and Mars(12), an even balance, perhaps slightly in favour of the 'dog.
13. The planetary day is ruled by the Moon and the hour by Jupiter. The Moon ultimately ends in the arms of Jupiter.

On balance, this set of significations seem to favour the Spanish as clear favourites for the bookmakers. Spain to win, although Croatia won't be easy opponents. If the game is extended, the transit of the Moon favours the Spanish to triumph.

In game commentary. A further thought occurred to me today. In traditional astrology, 'the end of the matter' is the fourth house cusp. The result may be indicated by significators associated with the IC. In this case, the quality of the game might be described by the MC's significators, with the two teams by the ascendant and descendant.

In this case, the IC lord is Jupiter, the natural significator of the favourite, with the bound lord being Mercury. Mercury is Gemini, in the bounds of Mars, the primary significator of the ascendant as lord. These symbols tend to confirm the Spanish as victors.

Oh dear! A Spanish own goal. 1-0 to the Croatians!

Half-time - 1-1.

Second half - now 2-1 to the Spaniards.

A total goal fest, currently 5-3 to the Spaniards.

Final score - 5-3 in favour of the Spanish.

In the words of Alan Partridge: "Back of the net!" The astrologer gets one back.

France vs. Switzerland

The French are the favourites here, heavily supported by the bookmakers.

A further refinement of our experimental technique:

The first house is for the favourite; the seventh house is for the underdog; the tenth house describes the match (being a public spectacle) and the fourth house the result, being the end of the matter.

The rulers and bound lords of these positions, and  the transit of the Moon seem to be helpful indicators to judge the match and result.

In this game, the favourites have Capricorn rising, meaning Saturn is their primary significator. This is a reversal of the idea that Saturn is the natural significators of the underdog. Cancer sets, ruler Moon.

1. L1 is Saturn, with ascendant in the Egyptian bounds of Saturn. Saturn rises retrograde in the first house. Antiscion MC is conjunct Saturn. Saturn itself is in the bounds of Venus.
2. L7 is the Moon, with descendant in the bounds of Jupiter. Moon approaches Jupiter in Pisces, with the moon's next aspect being the conjunction. Moon and Jupiter are in the bounds of Venus. Jupiter is the exaltation lord of Cancer.
3. L10 is Mars, with the MC in the bounds of Jupiter. Mars is in the bounds of Venus. Mars is ruled by the Sun in Cancer in the bounds of Venus.
4. L4 is Venus, with the IC being in the bounds of Jupiter. Venus is in the bounds of Jupiter.
5. Antiscion Mars is conjunct the IC. Antiscion Saturn is close MC.
6. The almutens of the houses show some interesting symbolism: almuten of the first - Saturn; almuten of the seventh - Jupiter and Moon; almuten of the tenth - Mars; almuten of the fourth - Moon.

The natural significator of the underdog, Saturn, in our experimental system, is prominently associated with the first house, with the ascendant being in Capricorn, in the bounds of Saturn with Saturn rising in it's own sign Aquarius. This is powerful symbolism suggesting the underdog Switzerland may overturn the favourite. Jupiter, exaltation lord of the seventh, with the descendant in the bounds of Jupiter, suggests the French matching the Swiss.  The match - the tenth house - looks combative, with the lord being Mars, but the bounds of Jupiter may temper this. The outcome is signified by L4, being Venus, in the bounds of Jupiter, with Venus being itself in the bounds of Jupiter. Venus itself is in the bounds of Jupiter. Its almuten is shared between Sun and Jupiter. Sun is in the bounds of Venus. All planets, apart from Mercury are in the bounds Venus or Jupiter. Mercury is in the bounds of Mars, with Mars itself in the bounds of Venus.

My first prediction was to suggest a big upset in favour of the Swiss! I might as well throw caution to the wind! However, further experience with the previous Spain-Croatia match, suggests that the favourites may win here, based on the Jupiterian symbolism associated with the fourth house.

Pre-match commentary. This is going to be interesting from an astrological point of view. Are the French, as favourites, in the grip of the Swiss (Saturnian symbolism of the first house) or are the underdogs totally overwhelmed by the favourites. This symbolism can be read two ways. It could be a big win for the French (Jupiter - natural significator of favourites), completely overwhelming the hapless underdog. This system of sports astrology is in its very earliest stages and this game could be instructive.

In game commentary. The Swiss are up 1-0. It looks like my original prediction of an upset could be correct. Still plenty of time to go.

Now 2-1 to the French after the Swiss missed a penalty. The match could go either way.

The French are 3-1 late in the second half. Now 3-2! 3-3! Extra time.

The Swiss won here, on penalties. My original prediction was correct for a Swiss win. This chart needs more study to understand how the symbolism was working here.

Hi Ed,

I just found out you opened this topic. Thank you, I look forward to reading and contributing.

Just wrote this in the other topic:

Croatia came back from 3-1 down to level 3-3 in the last minutes of the match. So it can be said that this is the first prediction that came out. In other words, this could be an indication that the station of Neptune is basically over. If so, then Sweden should win against Ukraine.

By the way, does anyone have the exact minute and second the Croatia-Spain match started? It is important for Saturn's position in the D9 chart.

England vs. Germany

The bookmakers have the England team as slight favourites according to Zagata. This suggest a closely fought tight match with an outcome that is difficult to determine.

Lets start with a look at the rulers of the day and hour.

1. Mars rules the day. Mars is L1. The Sun rules the hour. Sun is in Cancer in the bounds of Venus. The Moon rules Cancer and separates from the trine of Sun to square Mercury, L10.
2. The favourites in Mars ruled Scorpio, the ascendant being in the bounds of Mercury. Mercury itself is in its own sign Gemini in the bounds of Mars. This suggests the English are a powerful team.
3. L7 is Venus, the descendant being in Scorpio, in the bounds of Jupiter. Venus itself is in Leo in the bounds of Jupiter.
4. The match itself, is shown by the tenth house cusp, being in Virgo, a Mercury ruled sign. The MC degree is in the bounds of Jupiter.
5. The outcome is shown by the fourth, Jupiter ruled, with the IC degree in the bounds of Venus, and the Moon and Jupiter in Pisces. The Moon is in the bounds of Jupiter, Jupiter itself being dignified in its own sign. Jupiter is close the fourth house cusp.
6. The house almutens for 1, 4, 7 and 10 are the same as the house rulers.
7. The antiscia positions of Saturn and Mars, the two planets being nearly in opposition in the chart, straddle the ascendant, with Saturn conjunct ascendant and Mars conjunct descendant.
8. Antiscion ascendant is conjunct Saturn in the chart; antiscion descendant will be near Mars.
9. Mars is the most elevated planet in the chart.
10. Transit Moon is in Jupiter ruled Pisces, in the bounds of Jupiter. Moon moves to square Mercury, from the trine of the Sun.
11. Fortune is in Cancer, in the exaltation of Jupiter, and in the bounds of Jupiter. Moon trines Fortune.

The preponderance of Jupiter symbolism suggests that England should prosper in this game. The natural significator of the favourite is Jupiter. Saturnian symbolism, being for the 'dog, is conspicuously absent. However, these matches are always closely fought so don't rule the German team out.

Pre-match commentary. The symbolism does support an England win. However, I'm concerned that the antiscia positions of Saturn and Mars, straddling the horizon, indicate the 'dog has a sting in its tail! At the moment I am unclear about antiscia symbolism in this method, but the combination is perhaps the most potent indication of a German win, perhaps very late in the game, in extra time, or in a shoot-out.

In game commentary. England 1-0 up with about fifteen minutes to go. We've been here before plenty of times!

Late goal for England - 2-0.

England win 2-0.

Bookmakers 2 Astrologer 2.

If only I'd had full confidence in my Switzerland prediction, we'd be up by a goal now!

Hi Zagata - I'm not sure of the time the match precisely started. I hope you enjoy the thread. I'm experimenting here to see if there is a system for beating the bookmakers! I think I'm borrowing from elsewhere, but I've not seen this system exactly.

The final knock out match of this round is between Sweden and Ukraine. The Swedes are favoured to win.

1. The planetary day ruler is Mars, in the bounds Saturn, approaching opposite Saturn. The ruler of the hour is Mercury, in the bounds of Mars.
2. L1 is Jupiter, in dignity in Pisces, in the bounds of Venus, on the cusp of the third house.
3. L7 is Mercury in dignity in Gemini, in the bounds of Venus.
4. L10 is Venus in the bounds of Jupiter. Mercury, L7 is approaching trine MC.
5. L4, the outcome, is ruled by Mars. The IC is in the bounds of Mars.
6. Almutens of the houses: first - Jupiter, ten - Saturn, seven - Mercury, four - Sun, Mars
7. The Moon is in Pisces in the bounds of Jupiter, clearly signifying the power of the favourites. However it moves in the course of the match closer to square Mercury, the significator of the 'dog. It is separating from the trine of the Sun.
8. The natural significator of the 'dog, Saturn, is in mixed reception with Mercury, by triplicity and face. There is a mutual reception by exaltation between Venus and Jupiter, and multiple mixed receptions between the two.
9. Fortune is in the bounds of Mercury, with Mercury L7 dexter sextile.
10. I have not previously noted that Mercury and Jupiter are in each other's detriment. Jupiter is the fall of Mercury. I am unclear if this symbolism plays a relevant role as the impact seems neutral.

The symbolism here is finely balanced. It seems to turn on the significators of the fourth house, the outcome of the match.

L4 is Mars, Mars in the bounds of Saturn, the natural significator of the 'dog. L7 is Mercury in the bounds of Mars. There is a mixed reception between Mercury and Saturn. The day and hour are ruled by Mercury and Mars, significators associated with the underdog. There is no denying the status of the favourites, particularly associated with the first and tenth houses. The Swedes may dominate much of the match, living up to their status. However, in the end, Ukraine should tip this match. Although the MC is ruled by Venus and is in the bounds of Jupiter, the almuten is Saturn, probably giving the 'dog the edge.

Ukraine to win. Another one where I pitch myself against the bookies.

In game commentary. First half goal from Ukraine - 1-0 to the underdog. 1-1 going in at half-time. 1-1 at full-time. 30 minutes of extra time to play. A very late Ukrainian goal in the final minutes of extra time: 2-1.

There is an interesting question here: whether a new chart should be drawn for the start of extra time, which usurps the chart for the start of the match, or whether the match chart still holds true. The same might be said for the start of a penalty shoot-out.

Result: 2-1 to Ukraine, the 'dog just had the edge!

Bookmakers 2 Astrologer 3 - now 1 up!

Hi Ed,

I read your analysis. It is interesting and different, but I don't quite understand the method. What are your sources for this? I appreciate that you are staying with the classical planets.  :)

I see you are using the tropical Zodiac in your analysis. Should I publish my predictions here tomorrow or on the thread I opened? Perhaps it would better if I publish them on the other thread as we are using different methods and Zodiacs?

This is a great question! I don't know the answer, but it is worth experimenting. Having said that, as far as I know, bookmakers do not include extra time and penalties in the original odds. In other words, unless one specifically bets that a given team will win in extra time or penalties, the odds are for the 90 minutes play. For example, while Spain eliminated Croatia in extra time, the game ended in a draw and hence odds 3.8 came out and not 1.61.

Hi Zagata - I suggest you put your predictions on the Chokoisky thread. Thanks for the feedback about my method. There's no specific source for this so it's very experimental at this stage. I don't know the answer to the extra time question either! It just occurred to me that any extension to the game could be thought to be a new contest.

Good luck with your predictions.

QF1 - Spain vs. Switzerland

Spain are favourites
Switzerland are underdogs

Planetary day ruler is Venus
Planetary hour ruler is Moon

Jupiter is the natural significator for: Spain
Saturn is the natural significator for: Switzerland

Jupiter is in Pisces in dignity in the bounds of Venus
Saturn is in Aquarius in dignity in the bounds of Venus

L1 is primary significator for: Spain
L1 is Mars in the bounds of Saturn ruled by Sun in the bounds of Venus
Ascendant is in the bounds of Jupiter

L7 is primary significator for: Switzerland
L7 is Venus in the bounds of Venus ruled by Sun in the bounds of Venus
Descendant is in the bounds of Saturn

L10 is in Mercury in dignity in the bounds of Mars
MC is in the bounds of Mars

L4 is Jupiter in Pisces in dignity in the bounds of Venus
IC is in the bounds of Mars
Almuten of H4 is Venus

House almutens are: as per rulers apart from H4

Transit Moon: is in Aries, ruled by Mars in the bounds of Mercury, approaching sextile Mercury, separating from the trine of Mars

Lord of Fortune is Mercury, Fortune is in the bounds of Mercury
Lord of Daimon is Saturn, Daimon is in the bounds Jupiter

PNL is in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, in the bounds of Mercury

Saturn's almuten is Saturn
Jupiter's almuten is Venus

Mars as most elevated planet opposes Saturn, Venus is less than one degree below Mars in altitude

This game could be closer than the bookies think. Spain are heavily favoured, but the symbolism suggests that Switzerland are able to give a good account of themselves. However, on balance, the weight of symbolism favours the Spanish to progress here.

Key indicators: MC and IC in the bounds of Mars, Mars is L1, L1 is Mercury and Fortune is in the bounds of Mercury, Mercury is in the bounds of Mars, Daimon is ruled by Saturn but in the bounds of Jupiter, L4 is Jupiter albeit in the bounds of Venus, Lot of Exaltation conjunct Fortune, Ascendant is in the bounds of Jupiter.

In game commentary. 1-1 well into the second half. The remainder of the match should be an interesting contest. This went 1-1 into extra time, despite Switzerland being a player down. In the end it went to penalties, despite Spain having 70% of the possession. The Swiss definitely did not disgrace themselves.

Spain win a tight match, on penalties.

Bookies 2, Astrologer 4!

Using this method I have predicted the outcome of four of the last five matches, and the fifth match, the Swiss victory, was very close to being correct. However, it is worth bearing in mind that it's only in the Sweden-Croatia match that I got one past the bookies. All the other predictions went with the bookmakers' choices. If I'd stuck with my original prediction of a Swiss victory, that would have been another one over on the bookies.

I've reworked the scores as follows:

Match 1: Netherlands (F) vs Croatia (U), underdog win,

Bookmakers 0, Astrologer 0 (neither of us predicted the winner)

Match 2: Belgium (F) vs Portugal (U), favourite win

Bookmakers 1, Astrologer 0 (I backed the loser)

Match 3: Croatia (U) vs Spain (F), favourite win

Bookmakers 1, Astrologer 0 (both backed winner)

Match 4: France (F) vs Switzerland (U), underdog win

Bookmakers 1, Astrologer 0 (both backed the loser)

Match 5: England (F) vs Germany (U), favourite win

Bookmakers 1, Astrologer 0 (both backed the winner)

Match 6: Sweden (F) vs Ukraine (U), underdog win

Bookmakers 1, Astrologer 1 (I backed the underdog)

Match 7: Spain (F) vs Switzerland (U), favourite win

Bookmakers 1, Astrologer 1 (both backed the favourite)

QF2: Italy vs. Belgium

Italy are favourites
Belgium are underdogs

Planetary day ruler is Venus
Planetary hour ruler is Jupiter

Jupiter is the natural significator for: Italy
Saturn is the natural significator for: Belgium

Jupiter is in Pisces in dignity in the bounds of Venus
Saturn is in Aquarius in dignity in the bounds of Venus

L1 is primary significator for: Italy
L1 is Saturn in Aquarius in dignity in the bounds of Venus ruled by Sun setting in the bounds of Venus
Ascendant is in the bounds of Jupiter
House almuten is Saturn

L7 is primary significator for: Belgium
L7 is Moon in the bounds of Mars ruled by Mars in Leo in the bounds of Saturn
Descendant is in the bounds of Venus
House almuten is Venus

L10 is Mars in Leo in the bounds of Saturn ruled by the Sun in Cancer in the bounds of Venus
MC is in the bounds of Venus
House almuten is Venus/Mars

L4 is Venus in Leo ruled by the Sun in the bounds of Venus
IC is in the bounds of Mercury
Almuten of H4 is Venus

House almutens are: as per rulers apart from H7 (Venus) and and H10 (Venus/Mars jointly)

Transit Moon: is in Aries, ruled by Mars in the bounds of Mercury, separating from opposite Fortune and sextile Mercury, VOC, next aspect is square Venus

Lord of Fortune is Venus, Fortune is in the bounds of Jupiter
Lord of Daimon is Jupiter, Daimon is in the bounds Saturn

PNL is in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, in the bounds of Mercury

Saturn's almuten is Saturn
Jupiter's almuten is Venus
Sun's almuten is Moon and Venus
Moon's almuten is Sun and Mars
Mercury's almuten is Mars
Venus' almuten is Sun
Mars' almuten is Sun

Mixed receptions between Sun and Moon, Sun and Venus

Mars as most elevated planet opposes Saturn, Venus is less than one degree below Mars in altitude

The odds suggest that this match is a very tight affair, and the astrology tends to agree. This is a very tough match to pass judgement on.

Overall, the symbolism favours the 'dog, so Belgium to win, but it will be close and ultimately both sides have a chance here.

Key indicators: L1 is Saturn (the previous game with a Saturn sign rising was won by the 'dog Switzerland), L7 is Moon in the bounds of Mars ruled by Mars in Leo in the bounds of Saturn, L10 is Mars in Leo, Mars is ruled by Sun in Cancer in the bounds of Venus, MC is in the bounds of Venus, almuten H10 is Venus/Mars, L4 is Venus in Leo, IC is in bounds of Mercury, almuten H4 is Venus, Mercury is in the bounds of Mars.

Mars is exaltation lord of Capricorn and hence, of the first house.

The day and hour rulers are powerful contra-indications here, and do support a win by the favourites. However, one potential of this symbolism is that the Italian's approach is undermined by a certain complacency in this match. In my view the game turns of the relationship between Mercury, being the bound lord of the IC being in the bounds of Mars, Mars, being L10 is in the bounds of Saturn, transit Moon is in the bounds of Mars, L7 is the Moon in the bounds of Mars in the bounds of Saturn. Saturn is the natural significator of the underdog.

This game is still under the sway of the pre-natal lunation in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn in the bounds of Mercury, suggesting that all things being equal, in this game the 'dog will progress.

Pre-match commentary. This could be another decisive game for this method of sports astrology. Very difficult to make a definitive prediction. I'm still going with the 'dog.

In game commentary. Second half and Italy lead 2-1. It's not over yet, but this prediction may go against me. Having said that the symbolism was very difficult to read.

Final result: Belgium 1 Italy 2.

Bookmakers 2, Astrologer 1.

A challenging game to read from an astrological point of view. I think the learning is that the Venus symbolism may have been more important than I thought. One to learn from.

QF3 - Denmark vs Czech Republic

Denmark are favourites
Czech Rep are underdogs

Planetary day ruler is Saturn
Planetary hour ruler is Sun

Jupiter is the natural significator for: Denmark
Saturn is the natural significator for: Czech Rep

Jupiter is in Pisces in dignity in the bounds of Venus
Saturn is in Aquarius in dignity in the bounds of Venus

L1 is primary significator for: Denmark
L1 is Jupiter in Pisces in dignity in the bounds of Venus ruled by Jupiter in the bounds of Venus
Ascendant is in the bounds of Venus
House almuten is Jupiter

L7 is primary significator for: Czech Rep
L7 is Mercury in Gemini in dignity in the bounds of Mars, Mars is in the bounds of Saturn
Descendant is in the bounds of Venus
House almuten is Mercury

L10 is Venus in Leo in the bounds of Venus, ruled by the Sun in the bounds of Venus
MC is in the bounds of Saturn
House almuten is Saturn

L4 is Mars in the bounds of Saturn, ruled by the Sun in the bounds of Venus
IC is in the bounds of Jupiter
Almuten of H4 is Sun

House almutens are: as per rulers apart from H4 (Sun) and H10 (Saturn)

Transit Moon: is in Taurus, ruled by Venus in the bounds of Venus, approaching sextile Jupiter in the bounds of Venus

Lord of Fortune is Venus, Fortune is in the bounds of Saturn
Lord of Daimon is Saturn, Daimon is in the bounds of Mars

PNL is in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, in the bounds of Mercury

Saturn's almuten is Saturn
Jupiter's almuten is Venus

Mars as most elevated planet opposes Saturn

The symbolism here clearly favours the Danes to progress. There is something for the Czechs, in L4 ruler Mars being in the bounds of Saturn and MC being in the bounds Saturn, almuten Saturn but the preponderance of Venusian and Jupiterian symbolism suggests that the Danes will go through.

Result: 2-1 to the Danes as predicted.

Bookmakers 2, Astrologer 1 (both predicted the favourite to win)

Q4 - England vs Ukraine

England are favourites
Ukraine are underdogs

Planetary day ruler is Saturn (since this is a nocturnal chart, Mercury is co-ruler)
Planetary hour ruler is Mercury

Jupiter is the natural significator for: England
Saturn is the natural significator for: Ukraine

Jupiter is in Pisces in dignity in the bounds of Venus
Saturn is in Aquarius in dignity in the bounds of Venus, Saturn rises in the first house (I missed this yesterday in the Belgium-Italy game - a decisive factor in the Swiss win over the French. By the way, in yesterday's Belgium-Italy game, where the favourite won with Capricorn rising, Saturn was on the cusp of the second house. In today's match, Saturn is clearly a first house planet.)

L1 is primary significator for: England
L1 is Saturn in dignity in the bounds of Venus ruled by Sun in the bounds of Venus
Ascendant is in the bounds of Venus
House almuten is Mars/Saturn, Mars is in the bounds of Saturn (see comments on Saturn's house position above)

L7 is primary significator for: Ukraine
L7 is Moon in the bounds of Venus ruled by Sun in the bounds of Venus
Descendant is in the bounds of Mercury, Mercury is in the bounds of Mars
House almuten is Moon

L10 is Mars in the bounds of Saturn ruled by Sun in the bounds of Venus
MC is in the bounds of Mercury
House almuten is Mars

L4 is Venus in Leo in the bounds of Venus, Venus is ruled by the Sun in Cancer in the bounds of Venus
IC is in the bounds of Mercury
Almuten of H4 is Moon

House almutens are: as per rulers apart from H1 Mars/Saturn and H4 Moon

Transit Moon: is in Taurus, ruled by Venus in the bounds of Venus, separating sextile Jupiter in the bounds of Venus, and approaching square Venus in the bounds of Venus

Lord of Fortune is Jupiter, Fortune is in the bounds of Mars
Lord of Daimon is Mars, Daimon is in the bounds Venus

PNL is in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, in the bounds of Mercury

Sun's almuten is Moon
Moon's almuten is Moon and Venus
Mercury's almuten is Mercury
Venus' and Mars' almuten is Sun
Saturn's almuten is Saturn
Jupiter's almuten is Venus

Sun-Venus mixed receptions, Venus-Jupiter mixed receptions, Venus-Saturn mixed receptions

Mars as most elevated planet opposes Saturn, separating from the opposition of Saturn

Mercury is important, 3 out of 4 angles in the bounds of Mercury. Mercury itself is strong in Gemini in the bounds of Mars, Mars is in Leo in the bounds of Saturn. Mars is ruled by Sun in Cancer, ruler Moon, in the bounds of Venus.

In my earliest predictions I took Venus, the lesser benefic, as a natural co-significator of the favourite. In later predictions I didn't pursue this line of reasoning, but I am beginning to think this idea has some merit, particularly where the symbolism is not decisive. In this case, Mars, as the lesser malefic, would be the natural co-significator of the underdog.

Verdict

The English are heavily favoured to win. However, once again, the astrology suggests this game could be extremely close. This match could go on into extra time or even penalties. Symbolism suggests both sides have a chance to win here. The real challenge, from an astrological point of view, is that England's primary significator (L1) is Saturn, and Saturn is the natural significator of the underdog. This immediately brings the Ukrainians into the spotlight. The symbological meaning of this is that the underdog, as Saturn, the greater malefic, has the potential to spoil the natural signification of the favourite, being Jupiter, the greater benefic. This was a decisive factor in the Swiss win, as underdog, over the favoured French, with Capricorn rising, Saturn in the first house in dignity. One difference in the earlier match was that the ascendant was itself in the bounds of Saturn, being the greater malefic. In this match the ascendant is in the bounds of Venus, being the lesser benefic.

This experimental system is in its early stages of development, and it is unclear at this time, what weight should be accorded to the various layers of signification. For instance, is Venus, as L4, a more powerful significator for the outcome of the match than the bound lord of the IC, Mercury. Is the almuten of H4, being the Moon, more important than either of these significators. This will require a lot of work to sort out. My working hypothesis is that, so far as sports astrology goes, rulership is probably the least important, setting out the broad framework in which the match is played. The bounds seem to take us down to the actual quality of the time as it will come to pass. The almutens seem to reinforce the signification of both, but are potentially the most important level of symbolism, being the summation of the different types of dignity associated with a degree or sign.

In the end, the symbolism is not clearly for the favourite or the underdog. My view on the importance of Mercury in this match is that it is likely to describe the style of play, being quick, difficult to follow, characterised by many rapid moves, surprises, mistakes and end to end action. Mercury, although the bound lord of H10 (the quality of play), H7 (the underdog) and H4 (the outcome), isn't decisively associated with either side. It's clearest association is with the underdog, as bound lord of the descendant. The chain of bound rulers for Mercury goes to Mars, Saturn and back to Venus in its own bound. Venus is the bound lord of the ascendant. I wonder if the result will be decided by an unfortunate mistake, which turns out to favour England. On balance, I am going to say that the favourites will progress, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Ukrainians win. The natural co-signification of Venus for the favourite just seems to tip the balance in England's favour, but really this match is probably too close to call from an astrological point of view. I don't share the bookmakers' certainty on this one.

Pre-match commentary.

Hermes speaks!

I have been reflecting on the Mercury symbolism in this chart. I don't think the symbolism can yet be fully understood within the context of this system. In classical mythology, Mercury (or Hermes in the Greek pantheon), is the trickster god, constantly playing people (and gods) for fools and keeping people (and gods!) guessing. Mercury is the god who moves between heaven and earth, the messenger of the gods. In classical Greek, Hermes means 'he of the stone heap'. A pile of stones was often placed at crossroads as a waymarker, reinforcing Hermes association with travelling.

Astrologers often notice incidental details in the world around them and note the time of the 'showing'. Carl Jung, who wrote extensively on Hermes, called this phenomenon 'synchronicity'. He relates the appearance of a brightly coloured beetle during a therapy session as an example of our synchronistic world. The client had been describing the appearance of a scarab beetle in a dream just before a beetle appeared at the window of Jung's consulting room. The beetle that showed itself was a scarabeid beetle, known in Europe, and a close match to the Egyptian scarab. The Egyptian beetle is a symbol of rebirth, and the significance of this moment led to the client's spiritual rebirth.

This morning a slightly less poetic image showed itself to me. However, the moment had all the hallmarks of synchronicity. I had gone to a local bakery with my wife. The bakery is beside a canal basin. My wife went into the shop and I noticed a dragon boat being manoeuvred into mid-basin by it's crew. A drummer struck up a steady beat and the coxswain got the team into a steady rhythm and the boat began to move slowly forward. I was astonished to see the word 'Mercury' emblazoned on the side of the hull.

Being an astrologer I immediately grabbed my phone and noted the time: 10:47AM. I have had many moments like this during my career as an astrologer, and I felt fairly sure that Mercury would be showing himself astrologically in this moment too.

When we returned home I entered the details of the moment into Planetdance. Mercury was, indeed, showing himself in that moment. Gemini, a Mercury ruled sign was culminating. Mercury was in the tenth house, shortly due to culminate. Fortune was in the final degree of Gemini. The north node was within a few degrees of the MC in Gemini. Virgo was rising, the other signed ruled by Gemini, and the exaltation of Mercury. In terms of dignity, Mercury is highly dignified in the moment.

Hermes' tricks were apparent in the reading of the chart. I repeatedly read the culminating sign as Virgo, and was confused because the chart wheel seemed to show the MC in the bounds of Jupiter, when the bounds of Mercury in Virgo extend up to the seventh degree. In Gemini the bounds of Mercury extend only to the sixth degree. I had to check multiple tables of Egyptian bounds before I suddenly realised that the culminating sign was Gemini. I was just about to conclude that the code I had written to produce the table of dignities I was using contained an error.

In all showings there are multiple layers of meaning. Astrologers will understand the significance of the dragon boat. This is a Chinese vessel, powered by a team wielding paddles. In astrology the nodal axis is associated with the head and tail of a dragon. The north node is the head; the south node is the tail. This imagery can immediately be related to the chart of the showing, with the north node just about to culminate and the south node just about to contact the IC. The drummer, who's beat is designed to synchronise the efforts of the team to ensure powerful and efficient paddling, stands in the bow - the north node. The drummer encourages the team forward. The coxswain, standing at the stern, steers and directs and pushes the team onwards - the south node. Dragon boats were traditionally used in competitions in ancient China, and are still used for racing today. In competition, the boats are decorated with the head and tail of a dragon.

The drummer and coxswain, the bow and the stern, the two sets of paddlers sat either side of the craft, brings duality to mind. Gemini is a dual sign, and the union of Hermes and Aphrodite gave life to the hermaphrodite, a creature with a dual male/female nature. It is no surprise that at this moment Gemini was culminating. The nodal axis is associated with eclipses, the union of the Sun and the Moon. The Sun/Moon midpoint at this moment was just 1 1/2 degrees wide of exact conjunction with the MC. About 2 or 3 minutes earlier the MC=SO/MO. The moment (MC) symbolises the reconciliation of yin and yang, reason and intuition, objectivity and subjectivity, a perfect expression of Jung's concept of sychronicity - the 'secret mutual connivance' between our inner and outer worlds.

What is the trickster telling us? And, more to the point, can we trust him? Or is a cosmic joke being played out? Is Hermes laughing at us? In all seriousness, can we take the symbolism of this moment and turn it to use, to predict the outcome of a football match, one of the most Mercurial of all sports, full of speed, interplay, moving between two sets of goal posts, passing, using the head and the feet, but not the hands, apart from the two resolute goalkeepers who may touch the ball.

Returning to the moment we see an alternative story. The hour ruler is Venus. The Gemini MC is in the bounds of Jupiter; the north node is in the bounds of Jupiter. Mercury is the bounds of Mars, which is in turn, in the bounds of Saturn, and Saturn is in the bounds of Venus. Fortune is in the bounds of Saturn. The ascendant is in the bounds of Venus, and Venus is in its own bounds. The descendant is in the bounds of Jupiter, and Jupiter is in the bounds of Venus. The IC, the outcome, is in the bounds of Jupiter. The south node is in the bounds of Jupiter. Moon, in the final degrees of Aries, in the bounds of Saturn, is soon to enter Taurus, a Venus ruled sign and the bounds of Venus.

The cosmic verdict seems clear - Jupiter and Venus triumph, and the favourites progress into the semi-finals. But astrology never secures the future. Foretelling is a fool's art. Astrologers are constantly tempted by the trickster god, and are constantly disappointed by their foretellings. Disappointment is a companion for those of us who love this art. Saturn walks with us.

If you need evidence of this, look at the chart for the moment I opened Planetdance to cast the dragon boat chart. Mercury culminates in the bounds of Mars, the MC is in the bounds of Mars, the ascendant is in the bounds of Mars, the descendant is the bounds of Mars, the IC is in the bounds of Saturn. Mars is in the bounds of Saturn. But note the Sun and Fortune in the bounds of Venus; Daimon is in the bounds of Jupiter. Daimon and Fortune are symbolic of the relationship between the Sun and the Moon - the midpoint of these two lots is the ascendant. Recall the Sun Moon midpoint on the MC in the dragon boat chart. And, thank Hermes, Saturn is in the bounds of Venus! I can hear Hermes laughing now.

Will England win, or will Ukraine play their mercurial best and triumph? I don't know, but I will stick with my prediction and prepare to be disappointed.

In game commentary. 4-0 to England. It looks like a resounding win for Jupiter and Venus. And Hermes!

The cosmic verdict seems clear - Jupiter and Venus triumph, and the favourites progress into the semi-finals. Indeed.

Astrology is a strange thing.

Bookmakers 2, Astrologer 1 (both of us predicted the favourite to win, although I was somewhat reluctant to do so, but Hermes clearly spoke the truth!)

Round of 16 - a review of Denmark vs Wales

In this match, I favoured the Welsh to win as underdogs, using Simon Chokoisky's system. However Denmark, as favourites, thumped the Welsh 4-0, a decisive victory that should show in any system of astrological sports prediction. Using my alternative system, the outcome is very clearly indicated, with virtually all symbolism favouring the Danes. I am fairly sure that had I been using this approach I would have predicted a clear win for Denmark.

Denmark are favourites
Wales are underdogs

Day ruler: Saturn
Hour ruler: Mars

Jupiter is the natural significator for: Denmark
Saturn is the natural significator for: Wales

Venus is the natural co-significator for: Denmark
Mars is the natural co-significator for: Wales

Although the day and hour ruler seem to favour the Welsh, both are in the bounds of Venus, the natural co-significator of the Danes. Venus is in the bounds of Saturn, but I wonder if the bound lords of bound lords are not especially relevant and the symbolical chain is getting strained.

L1 is primary significator for: Denmark
L1 is Mars in the bounds of Venus, Mars is in Leo ruled by Sun in Cancer in the bounds of Mars
Ascendant is in the bounds of Mercury, Mercury is in dignity in Gemini, in the bounds of Venus conjunct Fortune
Almuten of H1 is Mars

L7 is primary significator for: Wales
L7 is Venus in the bounds of Saturn, Venus is in Cancer in the bounds of Saturn ruled by the Moon.
Descendant is in the bounds of Jupiter. Jupiter is in Pisces, in dignity, in the bounds of Venus.
Almuten of H7 is Venus

L10 is Mercury in dignity in the bounds of Venus conjunct Fortune.
MC is in the bounds of Venus
Almuten of H10 is Mercury.

L4 is Jupiter in dignity in Pisces in the bounds of Venus
IC is in the bounds of Venus
Almuten of H4 is Mercury.

Transit Moon: is in Aquarius, ruled by Saturn in dignity in the bounds of Venus, moving from out of sign opposition to Venus to oppose Mars. Moon is in the bounds of Mercury. Mercury is in the bounds of Venus.

Fortune is in Gemini, ruled by Mercury in dignity, in the bounds of Venus.
Daimon is in Aries, ruled by Mars, in the bounds of Mars. Mars is in the bounds of Venus.

Ignoring mixed receptions by face, there are mixed receptions between Sun and Mars, Venus and Jupiter.

The preponderance of Venus and Jupiter symbolism here clearly favours a Danish victory. There is a paucity of Mars and Saturn symbolism, showing that the Welsh would have had a struggle to overturn the odds and a dominant Danish team.

The bookies and the astrology were in perfect alignment in this match.
