Right Ascension of ascendant
« on: December 09, 2023, 10:05:31 PM »
Hi,
I've written an AB program that exports the 6 points calculated by GETPLANET for the planet numbers 0-15 as shown in the AB Help.

k = 0;
    for (k < PLANETS)
      {
      getplanet(k,0,planpoints);   ` gets all the points into planpoints
         next=0; for (next < 6)
            {
            gridsetnum(next + j, i + 1, planpoints[next],2);
            }
         j = j + 6;
       }

Checking the results against Solar Fire it appears to be accurate for most points.  However, the Right Ascension of the ascendant is always 0.0.

Is this a bug?  can it be fixed?

thanks!
Mark

There was some problem with RA but i can't remember at the moment.
In horoscope - data i don't give a value for RA.
I will look at it tomorrow.

ps, great that you are using ab.

I made getplanet() set RA to 0 for the ascendant. Try an update.

Hi Jean,

Sorry if I wasn't clear.  It should NOT set the RA for the ascendant to 0.  That is what it was doing before (and still is with this most current update).   Depending on the birth latitude, etc., it should be within a few degrees of the ascendant longitude.

The other planets RAs are correct, including the MC.

Can you fix the ascendant RA?

thanks,
Mark

Oops, sorry i misunderstood you.
Unfortunately i don't know how to get at the RA of the ascendant, it's not documented in the swiss ephemeris as far as i can see.
Will ask around.

If this helps, here's the output from SolarFire for three charts from the PlanetDance.db that shows the Longitude, Travel, Latitude, Rt.Asc., Decl., Azi(0°N) and Alti. for planets, asc, and MC.

Cheers,

Wow, that was fast!  I checked a few charts and it looks great.

I'm curious, did the ASC (and MC?) require a different formula than planets?

Thanks so much!
Mark

The RA for MC is calculated by the swiss ephemeris, it's called ARMC.
So is the RA for planets, even stars.
But for things like asc etc. Ed sent me a little piece of code. It works for bodies on the ecliptic that have celestial latitude of 0 degrees.

Hi there - thanks for confirming that this is working well. I'm glad we have been able to help.

If you would like to post your script please add a thread to the Extension Scripts board. You can add the actual ab file as an attachment for registered users of the forum to download.

All the best. Ed

Hi Ed,

Thanks for your help.

I'm experimenting with some ideas that may or may not pan out.  If they seem useful, I'll clean up what I'm doing and post it.

Cheers,
Mark
