Planetdance crashes all the time on linux
« on: July 15, 2024, 10:22:27 AM »
Hi, I'm completely new in Planetdance, never used it before. As it doesn't run on android I just bought a laptop especially for being able to use Planetdance, which runs on Linux. Planetdance is installed (Wine 9) but crashes every 5 minutes.
Servicedesk tried to help but to no avail.
What can I do??

I have no answer for you. It runs fine on mint here, elsewhere too.

Hi Martine - I'm a Linux user too (Mint 21.2/Wine 5.22). There shouldn't be a problem with running PD on Linux as Jean says.

Could you list more details about your hardware and software and I'll see if I can help.

Thanks. Ed

Hi Ed, thanks for your quick answer. It's Linux Mint 21.3 and Wine 9.??
Helpdesk for my laptop installed the latest version of Wine just last friday, shall I ask him the details?

Hi Martine. What is your hardware? Brand of laptop, amount of Ram etc. I am using an older version of Wine. It might be the issue, unlikely but might be worth exploring. It should be definitely possible to get you running pd on this set up. Ed

Hi Ed, you give me hope! Being 60+ and very awkward with computers, I forwarded your questions to my helpdesk supporter. Can take a few days, I'll keep you informed.
Thanks!

Hi Martine - no problem, we'll get it sorted out. I will be away for a few days now, but will pick up any news later in the week. Ed

Planetdance has nothing that's exceptional, it should just run fine on 99% of all pc's. If it doesn't however, the cause is hard to detect, there are just pc's that 'act funny', just some weird combination of things that make a pc unstable for planetdance, like in your case. I don't think you're gonna find a solution.
You could try and install windows on that pc, it's made for windows so it will work there.

It's sad that you bought a laptop just for planetdance only to find it doesn't work.

Thank you Jean, yeah that's a pity. I wanted bigtechfree but it seems I must keep to Windows and send this laptop back.
Any suggestion from last hope Ed? If not topic can be closed.

Hi Martine. I generally stick to HP computers or Dell. These seem to be reliable with Linux. Specify FHD screen which is 1920x1080 pixels. Planet dance will work best on this. It is a pity your experience with Linux has been disappointing. You could try and HP machine with Linux. The other elements of your spec seem ok as the software is not demanding to run. Ed

Myself i would not buy hp, in my experience they are good but also a bit funny sometimes, for instance a programming trick back in the dos years that would work everywhere except on hp's. They seem to have a bit a mind of their own sometimes.
